At what point does one person’s freedom start costing everyone else theirs?
- Direct harm: your freedom ends where someone else gets hurt or their property gets damaged. Everything short of that is fair game.
- Limits others’ choices: ends where it shrinks what someone else can do, hurt or not. Loud music, blocking the sidewalk, secondhand smoke.
- Harms the commons: ends where it damages collective wellbeing: public health, the environment, shared spaces and resources.
- Wherever society draws it: the line isn’t philosophical, it’s wherever we collectively put it through law and norms.
- There is no line: freedom is absolute; other people’s discomfort is their problem.
